CompositeCast

Prototypes & Short-run Production

CompositeCast, offered only by Solid Concepts, was developed over a two year period that included testing at six early beta sites. Composite sheet material (fiberglass, graphite, Kevlar, etc.) is positioned in a precision Platinum Silicon mold. A proprietary fill method is used to fill the mold cavity along with the sheet material with our AFP (Advanced Formula Polymers). The result is a very tough and stiff cast part with B-side detail captured. These parts can be delivered within two weeks.

CompositeCast Advantages

  • Very fast processing of complex parts and panels without hard tooling
  • Excellent A and B-Side detail
  • Composite-like performance (i.e., high flex modulus, high impact strength)

CompositeCast Disadvantages

  • Short mold life: ~25 shots
  • Production rate: 2 or 3/day
  • Not as accurate as Hand Lay-up FRP or Resin Transfer Molding
