Congratulations to the University of Oregon, the 2011 PAC-12 Football Champions!
While you may not associate additive manufacturing with football, you might be interested to know that Solid Concepts played a pivotal role in creating the championship trophy presented to the Oregon Ducks.
When tasked with creating the 2011 championship PAC 12 football trophies, Archie Held Studios (Richmond, CA) looked to Solid Concepts’ ID-Light and QuickCast technologies. Initially a prototype was created with ID-Light to verify the new design. The trophies were ultimately going to be created from casted metal, allowing the ID-Light prototype to beautifully segue into Solid Concepts’ QuickCast investment casting patterns.
The investment casting pattern for the trophy was built using Solid Concepts’ QuickCast technology and SC 1000 photopolymer, which provided a superior investment casting pattern for the foundry. The final trophies were cast by a foundry out of 17-4 PH steel, then welded together and polished to look like Archie’s original design. The process allowed Archie to produce functional metal parts without hard tooling. Plus, the process was completed at nearly a third of the cost and in only three weeks' time.
